Learning & Teaching

A Focus on...
Learning, Collaboration and Re
sults

All Saints Parish School is a certified Professional Learning Community (PLC) School.  Hawker Brown Associates in partnership with the Catholic Education Office of Ballarat have provided us with Professional Learning to create a culture of learning urgency and proficiency.  In collaborative teams the teachers identify the essential learning elements within the English and Mathematics standards. Common Formative Assessment Tasks (CFATS) are used to measure student learning before and after 3 week learning cycles.  Student results are used to group children and to determine the "I can..." goals they need to achieve to reach the non negotiable level of proficiency and to be successful learners. Intensive intervention time is planned to assist students who require more instruction.

Our Learning and Teaching Structure

All Saints Parish School is a Professional Learning Communicty.  A Professional Learning Community puts all their energy into three focus areas:
1. Collaboration
2. Essential Learnings
3. Student Results

Our teachers work in collaborative teams.  They identify the essential learnings for numeracy, writing, reading, physical education, science, music and Indonesian.  The essential learnings are the curriculum content that are considered to be essential for each student to learn to provide leverage to the next standard. The teachers own the learning of all of the children in their learning centre and meet for two hours each week to discuss the learning needs and progress of all of their children. Mathematics, Writing and Reading are taught in 4 week units.  A Common Formative Assessment Test (CFAT) is given to each student at the beginning and end of the teaching unit.  The student growth is measured and presented to students and parents as traffic light data.

Tier 1 Intervention:
After analysisng student data and work samples the teachers determine the learning pathway for each individual child for the following week.  Students are placed into 3 learning groups according to which "I can" statements they are ready to learn.  These decisions are reviewed on a weekly basis.  Teachers are allocated to a group.

Tier 2 Intervention:
In addition to the classroom teaching at tier 1, small groups of students are nominated by the collaborative team to attend 30 minute Boost sessions with the Boost teacher.  Each learning centre has 3 boost sessions they can access to enhance student learning in Writing, Reading or Numeracy.

Tier 3 Intervention:
We provide a range of Intervention Programs at tier 3 to assist students with learning difficulties in Reading and Mathematics.
These programs extend for 10-20 weeks.

Special Assistance Programs exists to cater for students with special needs. Extension is provided by the classroom teacher for more gifted students, and individual programmes are drawn up for students as required.
